Daniel Boone takes another step to close Birdsboro Elementary

The Daniel Boone School Board took another step Monday toward closing Birdsboro Elementary Center.

The board passed a resolution to implement phase two of the elementary reconfiguration plan.

Phase two would move first grade out of Amity Elementary Center and into Monocacy Elementary Center, and move fourth grade out of Birdsboro Elementary Center and into Amity for the 2017-18 school year.

Cindy McGee, vice president of the Birdsboro Borough Council, asked the board for more information about potential layoffs and class sizes in phase two.

“There would be a potential reduction (of teaching staff) based on enrollment,” said Superintendent James Harris. “But that’s the same every year; that’s no different than last year.”

In phase three beginning with the 2018-19 school year, fifth grade would move out of Birdsboro and into Amity, and second grade would move from Amity to Monocacy.

Birdsboro would no longer house classes.

A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the district office, 2144 Weavertown Road.
